Randolph County chess match ends in stabbing

A Union City man is accused of stabbing a guest at his home after they began arguing during a chess match.

Michael A. Madden, 47, 506 S. State Line Road, is charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a Class D felony carrying a standard 18-month prison sentence.

Authorities allege Madden stabbed another man during a Dec. 20 fight in his home.

According to court documents, Madden told police that after the argument broke out during their chess match, his alleged victim tried to attack him three times.

In one instance, Madden said, he held the man down, by his throat, on a couch and used a knife to "flick" the victim's nostril, creating a small cut.

The man was cut on the left side of his abdomen when he attacked him for a third time, Madden said. Police said the victim had a softball-sized wound.

Madden, who was being held in the Randolph County jail under a $5,000 bond, on Monday received a June 16 trial date in Randolph Superior Court.
